Summary
Drone operations in the United Arab Emirates are regulated by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). Drone use requires registration, geofencing compliance, operational permissions, and camera-use restrictions across all emirates. Conservation and environmental projects require additional permits from national or emirate-level environment authorities.
Operational Rules
- Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) required
- BVLOS operations allowed only with GCAA approval
- Maximum altitude typically 120 metres AGL
- Night flying requires explicit authorisation
- Commercial drone use requires insurance
- Geofencing compliance mandatory in restricted zones
Registration and Marking
- All drones over 250 grams must be registered with GCAA
- Any drone equipped with a camera or sensor must be registered, even under 250 grams
- Drone operators receive an electronic ID (eID)
- eID number must be displayed on the drone
- Remote ID or broadcast identification required for certain classes (C0 to C3)
No-Fly Zones / Sensitive Areas

Conservation Use and Permit Requirements
Conservation-related drone operations such as wildlife monitoring, habitat surveys, coastal mapping, and anti-poaching support require BOTH of the following:

Additional Notes:
